The NFL season is here, which means it’s time to whip up your favorite game day comfort foods. We’re talking about Buffalo wings, dips, grilled favorites and maybe even a pot of chili beloved by Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Green Turkey Chili is a Mahomes family favorite, said to be a “staple” in their household during the football season. Created by the family’s personal chef, Chef Ben, the hearty chili is a comforting, spicy and nutrient-packed bowl that’s easy to prepare for chilly weeknights (no pun intended!).

We love that this chili is loaded with protein to help the three-time Super Bowl champion build and maintain muscle mass, support his bone health and keep him energized and satisfied for longer. Plus, this recipe is low in added sugar and packed with fiber, so we’re sure that this chili helps the family feel their best. Below is the complete recipe which can be found in the Chiefs organization’s cookbook, Kingdom Cookbook, which is free to access on the Kansas City Chiefs app.

Mahomes Family Favorite Green Turkey Chili

  • 2 poblano peppers, 1 whole, 1 diced
  • 1 bunch cilantro
  • 1 (8-ounce) container green enchilada sauce
  • 1 green chile (mild or hot)
  • 1 sweet potato, diced
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, diced
  • 1 can corn, rinsed
  • 1 can cannellini beans, rinsed
  • 2 cups chicken stock
  • 2 pounds ground dark turkey meat
  • 3 tablespoons fajita seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • Salt to taste
  • Sazón seasoning blend to taste
  1. Char the whole poblano over an open flame until blackened. Transfer to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap to steam for about 10 minutes. Peel away the charred skin.
  2. In a blender, combine the charred poblano, half a bunch of cilantro (use bottom half with stems), enchilada sauce, green chile, chicken stock and half of each can of corn and cannellini beans. Blend until smooth.
  3. Begin browning ground turkey in a large sauce pan over medium-high heat, breaking it up with the back of a wooden spoon. Stir in fajita seasoning, cumin, salt and Sazón.
  4. In a large stock pot, sauté diced poblano, sweet potato, onion and garlic until the onion becomes translucent. Add in the browned seasoned turkey, the remaining corn and beans and the poblano pureé to the pot. Cook over medium heat, stirring, until the chili begins to thicken. Turn it down to low heat for about 30 minutes.
  5. Taste and adjust the seasoning to your taste. Serve topped with garnishes of your choice, such as shredded cheese, sour cream, avocado, lime and cilantro.
