If you’re preparing for a weekend stroll with crunchy fall leaves and red-orange-yellow landscapes, you’re in luck. According to research data collected by FitFlop, one of the top trails for fall foliage in the U.S. might just be in your backyard.

Walking shoe experts compared trails by considering user reviews, foliage conditions, walkability and search demands. From there, they narrowed down the list to 10 walking trails that are worth visiting this season. Here’s the full list of the best trails in the country highlighting those crispy fall leaves, plus our editors’ picks for which ones you need to visit ASAP:

  1. Mount Lafayette and Franconia Ridge Trail Loop in Franconia, New Hampshire
  2. Kancamagus Highway Trail in White Mountains National Forest, New Hampshire
  3. Indian Head Trail at the Adirondack Mountain Reserve in Keene Valley, New York
  4. Mount Mansfield Loop Trail in Underhill State Park, Vermont
  5. Mohonk Preserve in Gardiner, New York
  6. Sunset Ridge Trail in Underhill State Park, Vermont
  7. Stowe Pinnacle Trail near Stowe, Vermont
  8. Letchworth State Park Gorge Trail in Castile, New York
  9. Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail in Elko County, Nevada
  10. Hawksbill Crag Trail in Kingston, Arkansas

While New Hampshire trails claim the top two spots for peak foliage trails in mid-October, we’re stoked to see EatingWell’s home state of Vermont receive the most love on the list. And our editors have special connections with these trails, so with their recommendations, you’ll know exactly where to go.

“I’ve hiked Stowe Pinnacle dozens of times since moving here in 2003,” our editorial director Carolyn Malcoun shares. “It’s not terribly long, so you don’t have to commit to an entire day. Plus, as the name implies, it’s right outside of Stowe. We like to time our hike so we can grab lunch or dinner in town after.” Malcoun recommends stopping by the Idletyme brewery while you’re in the area for “great food, a large patio, lawn games and a fun vibe.”

EatingWell’s assistant general manager Penelope Wall shares that Mount Mansfield Loop Trail is “an incredibly gorgeous hike,” but it may not be the most suitable for beginners.

“It’s very long, over seven miles and quite difficult,” she explains. Here’s her alternative suggestion: “Honestly? I would just hike the Mount Mansfield Haselton Trail to Cliff Trail. You’ll get gorgeous views, a good challenging hike and then you can take the gondola down.”

The Northeast reigns supreme for gorgeous fall leaves this time of year, but honorable mentions go out to trails in Nevada and Arkansas. We asked Arkansas-based travel creator Sarah Heer her thoughts on trail No. 10, and here’s what you should know before heading south this autumn.

“The trail is almost three miles out and back, and is clearly marked and very well maintained,” said Heer. “The first half is downhill switchback style with a couple benches to stop at along the way. Remember, what goes down must come back up. I would say it’s a moderate hike and fine for beginners who are in decent shape, but it’s not ADA accessible.”

Heer notes the trail to be a “perfect day hike” with “incredible views,” recommending to go early for a gorgeous sunrise among the trees. Afterwards, the Arkansas native suggests going to the Boxley/Ponca area for some elk viewing, or enjoy a waterfall chase in Compton. For lunch, a chicken salad sandwich at Buffalo Outdoor Center is a local favorite.

Walking outdoors can help combat stress, thanks to fresh air and vitamin D absorption. Plus, taking daily walks may help lower bad cholesterol, support healthy digestion and improve longevity. Travel to one of these beautiful trails and spend the day in warm hues with a cool breeze—your body and mind will be grateful!
