10 Podiatrist-Approved Non-Slip Shoes

by Editorial team

I used to work in kitchens, and I will never forget the day I completely wiped out in front of my entire kitchen team one summer. I was walking to the dishroom to grab a new mixing bowl. On a mission, I reached for the bowl, turned around, and began walking. My heel hit the ground, and the next thing I knew, my crisp, white chef’s jacket was mopping the floor. My friend helped me up, and for the entirety of my shift, I had a huge brown spot on my coat and butt—thanks to the dish water—that looked a little too much like a certain bathroom accident. Thankfully, I wasn’t hurt! I was just known as the dirty coat and butt girl for a few months. But the fall was unacceptable—I immediately bought new shoes.

Whether you’re on your feet at work, like me, or walking on different surfaces, it’s so important to have shoes with good traction. You never know when a slip will lead to a painful situation. And avoiding an embarrassing stain on your clothes is another valid reason to care. I learned the hard way, though you don’t have to. I spoke with three podiatrists to find out what their favorite non-slip shoe recommendations are. Below are insights from Dr. Gregory Alvarez, DPM, FACFAS at Ankle and Foot Centers of America, Dr. Bobby Pourziaee, DPM, “The High Heel Doctor” and Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon and Dr. Nicole G. Friels, FACPM, C.Ped at Lexington Podiatry.

Best Non-Slip Shoes for Walking and Working

Hoka Bondi 9

Hoka

“When I’m recommending shoes to help prevent falls or injuries, I always look for a stable base, good traction, and plenty of cushioning. The goal is to keep the foot supported and the wearer confident on all surfaces—whether that’s tile floors, wet pavement or uneven sidewalks,” says Dr. Alvarez. “The Hoka Bondi provides outstanding cushioning and a wide, stable base. The rocker sole design helps guide the foot smoothly through each step, improving balance and easing pressure on joints.”

Brooks Ghost 14

“The Brooks Ghost 14’s midsole is designed to adapt to the stride, providing cushioning and slip resistance,” says Dr. Friels. You don’t have to stick to just non-slip work shoes, though she has wonderful recommendations for that below, too. These sneakers are more traditional but offer excellent traction on different surfaces.

Skechers Work Sure Track

Amazon

“My first recommendation would be the Skechers Work Sure Track,” says Dr. Friels. “I love them because they’re slip-resistant, of course, but also the outside rubber sole has amazing traction, and it’s fantastic for multiple surfaces. I have patients who work on metal grates and in painting areas, so they could easily slip on spilled paint or any type of moisture. These shoes really fill all those buckets. Also, the shoe’s memory foam is great because of its cushioning—when you’re standing on concrete a lot, you get generalized foot fatigue. It also has a lace-up design, which makes it fit nicely on the foot. They’re fantastic for long hours on your feet.”

Brooks Addiction Walker 2

Brooks

“The Brooks Addiction Walker 2 is one of my favorites for everyday wear,” adds Dr. Alvarez. “It has a slip-resistant outsole, firm arch support, and a durable structure that helps keep the foot steady and comfortable.”

New Balance 990v6

Zappos

Alvarez’s final recommendation is the New Balance 990v6 shoes. “This model offers excellent stability with a balanced platform and superior grip. It’s a versatile option for patients who want both comfort and control in their daily footwear.” Not only that, but they’re a stylish option that works for a wide range of outfits.

Clove Forte

Clove

“Whether you’re walking city streets on rainy days, working in busy kitchens, or just want everyday shoes that help prevent slips and falls, choosing the right non-slip footwear is essential,” says Dr. Pourziaee. “Clove’s shoes are independently tested for certified slip resistance, meaning they’re proven to maintain grip on slick or wet surfaces,” he adds. “The dual-density foam midsole provides excellent shock absorption and support, helping reduce fatigue throughout the day. The fluid-repellent upper also keeps your feet dry without trapping heat, which makes these a smart, durable choice for anyone who spends hours on their feet.”

Dansko Platform Pro Clogs

Dansko

“The Dansko clogs come with a slip-resistant outsole, and they are really well known for a spacious toe box,” says Dr. Fields. She does recommend choosing a pair that doesn’t have a heel. So, opt for a flatter sole with less of a taper, like this platform option. “You want a neutral or a zero millimeter drop because, when we have any type of heel, standing on these hard surfaces for an extended time could cause Achilles tendon constriction. I do like the arch support built into these clogs, which is great for absorbing shock and just to reduce stress overall on the feet and the back.”

New Balance 626 v2

Amazon

Similar to the Brooks Ghost 14, these New Balance sneakers are “suitable for people working or standing for long periods,” says Dr. Fields. “The rubber outsole offers reliable traction and durability. Both these and the Brooks Ghost are practical beyond running, effective for general work environments requiring non-slip shoes.”

Merrell Jungle Moc

REI

“The Merrell Jungle Moc is a super convenient slip-on shoe. They have a Vibram outsole for fantastic grip. Just make sure that your foot type is suitable for wearing minimalist-style shoes. The footbed is cushioned, and the mesh is really breathable, making them super comfortable. It’s great for quick on-the-go type activities, but I wouldn’t recommend standing for long periods of time if you are prone to any type of foot or weight-bearing issue in the knees, hips and back,” says Dr. Fields.

Skechers Glide-Step Pro SR

Skechers

“This athletic-style shoe blends slip resistance with sporty comfort. The hands-free slip-in design makes it easy to wear while still offering a snug fit for stability. Its responsive midsole provides great cushioning for all-day comfort, and the outsole is water repellent with strong traction. They make a great option for anyone, like restaurant staff or parents on the go,” says Dr. Pourziaee.
