I’ve been testing products in the food space for over three years, which means I’m pretty familiar with the gear on the market. There are many items that I want, but few that I yearn for, such as the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer. 

It’s a big expense, but I just knew that this air fryer would (not to be dramatic) change my life. I drooled over the oven’s many included functions, which meant that I could get rid of two other appliances on my counter. Plus, faster weeknight meals and extra oven space for holiday prep? The beauty of this timing is that this oven will be a huge win ahead of the winter holiday season, when food prep can become a pain point. Because it has so many features, this appliance becomes a do-it-all machine, ready to go for whatever you need. 

It’s an air fryer toaster oven, so it serves as my toaster, air fryer and, on most days, my oven. I use the sleek dial to select presets such as toast, broil, bake, roast, warm, proof, air fry, reheat, slow cook and dehydrate. The broil setting is useful for toasting bakery English muffins. I love the air fry setting for crisping up slices of tofu for effortless dinner prep (no babysitting a skillet on the stove). There are even settings for making a pizza, toasting a bagel or baking a batch of cookies—all the essentials. Two additional dials control amounts, cook time and temperature, depending on what setting you’re using. 

Another highlight of the Breville is its size. It’s not a mini countertop appliance: It’s roomy, measuring 17.5 x 21.5 x 12.7 inches. It can fit a 9 x 13-inch sheet tray, a 5-quart Dutch oven and a variety of casserole dishes, so I won’t need to fight over oven space when it comes to Thanksgiving sides. It’s also speedy! It preheats in half the time of my convention oven, and gets food crispy and golden brown with little to no fussing.  

It’s highly functional, and the backlit display is always easy to read. I never thought I would click the oven light button as often as I do, but it’s essential. I mean, who doesn’t want to monitor those late-night batches of cookies? 

To make all of my dreams come true, Breville includes a few accessories, such as one 13-inch pizza pan, two oven racks, one 9 x 13-inch broil rack, one enamel roasting pan and one mesh basket rack for dehydrating and air frying. That’s everything you need to get healthy dinners, cozy breakfasts and afternoon snacks on the table.
