Jimmy Fallon's 4-Ingredient Avocado Toast Recipe

  • Jimmy Fallon shared his avocado toast recipe after trying Taylor Swift’s sourdough.

  • This four-ingredient recipe is customizable and a great way to celebrate Swift’s new album.

When Jimmy Fallon had Taylor Swift on his show to promote her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, she brought him a special gift: homemade sourdough. The pop superstar has been showing off her bread all over the world in conjunction with her press tour, and it seems to be her go-to guest gift.

And as a little extra joke for her interviewers, Swift has been labeling her bread with puns that tie into her album. That means Fallon’s bread wasn’t just a loaf of sourdough—it was “The Loaf of a Dough Girl,” complete with a cat sticker. On his Instagram, Fallon shared that he made avocado toast with the precious loaf. The simple, classic recipe is an easy one to make at home, though it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get bread from this particular baker.

As Fallon shares in his caption, you only need a few ingredients to make this toast shine. Start with a nice sturdy slice of toast, plus avocado, red pepper flakes, flaky salt and your favorite olive oil. Slice the avocado and mash it with a fork, then spread on your toast. Sprinkle on the salt and chili flakes, then finish with a drizzle of olive oil. You’ll be ready to dig in faster than you can even say “loaf of a dough girl.”

Sourdough makes a particularly tasty base for avocado toast because its flavor pairs nicely with mild avocado, and since it’s a heartier bread, it can handle the weight of a big, mashed avocado and your favorite toppings. Avocados boast many health benefits because of their high fiber and beneficial fat content. Sourdough, whether made by a celebrity or at home, offers health benefits as well, including some perks for your gut.

Fallon says that Swift makes “the best sourdough,” but if you can’t get your paws on a coveted loaf made by the singer herself, a high quality bakery can provide a substitute, or you can make your own using a starter.

Some fans commented on Fallon’s post with recommendations to upgrade his toast, from a generous drizzle of hot honey to a little touch of cottage cheese as the base. To make it more of a meal, you could consider adding an egg on top for extra protein. A fried or scrambled egg is going to taste great, but if you like a softer egg, poached or sunny side up gives you a nice runny yolk for the bread to soak up.

If you don’t have sourdough, a thick, artisan style wheat toast, sprouted grain or seeded bread would work nicely as well, and you can add on all your favorite toppings as you see fit. (We’re big fans of going with avocado and burrata or avocado and white beans.)

Swift’s fiance, Travis Kelce, commented right away, saying “let’s go!” with bread and fire emojis, so he’s pumped about Fallon’s recipe as well. We have to admit, this one might just inspire our breakfast and lunch plans this weekend—when it comes to avocado and toast, it’s always a *love story.*
